A southern tradition....The Groom's Cake!

The Groom's cake is a long-standing tradition in the south and a fun gift a bride can give her groom! Think back to a scene in "Steel Magnolias" where all the women are having a discussion about a red and gray cake in the shape of an armadillo. That armadillo was the groom's cake Shelby was planning to give her husband-to-be.

The groom's cake is typically smaller than the wedding cake and is decorated to reflect a particular hobby or interest of the groom. My husband is a huge Boston Red Sox fan so when we got married I went with a Red Sox themed grooms cake & he loved it...so did all the other Red Sox fans at our wedding!

Here's a little history of the "Groom's Cake"....The groom's cake was not to be served to the guests while at the wedding reception, but rather it was to be sliced up, placed into packages and given to them as favors when they departed. Single women at the wedding would take their pieces of cake home and sleep with it under their pillows in hopes of dreaming of their future husbands.

While groom's cakes are a tradition in the south, elsewhere it is really a matter of preference. There is no rule, but if you want to add a sentimental touch to your wedding day, then honor your groom with his own cake. It is a sweet gesture that will give your guests something extra to talk about.

Who Knew....J.Crew!!!

J.Crew has been a favorite of mine for years, but their wedding attire is a fun, flirty way to dress the bride, groom & bridal party. The best part is the price point...very adorable! Prince Rainier III of Monaco originally proposed to Grace Kelly with a Cartier eternity band of rubies and diamonds. When he saw other leading ladies in Hollywood were flashing bigger rings, he quickly ordered this 10.5-carat emerald-cut diamond flanked by two baguettes, also from Cartier.

Queen Elizabeth II
The diamonds for Queen Elizabeth II’s engagement ring from Prince Philip have a special history: They came from a tiara belonging to Philip’s mother, Princess Andrew of Greece.

Princess Diana
Lucky Princess Diana, she got to choose her own ring from a selection presented by Garrard Jewelers when Prince Charles proposed. There are a few different theories on why Diana selected the 18-carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds: the color matched her eyes, the Queen may have actually selected it, or as Diana was later quoted as saying, “It was the biggest.”

Sophie, Countess of Wessex
Following in family tradition, Prince Edward also proposed with a ring from the British royal jeweler Garrard. He presented his bride Sophie Rhys-Jones with a two carat oval diamond, flanked by two smaller heart-shaped gems—the ring is worth an estimated $150,000!

Charlene Wittstock
When perennial bachelor Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, proposed to Charlene Wittstock he did it in style. He presented the former South African Olympic swimmer with a serious sparkler that features a pear-shaped center diamond set in gray gold and embellished with round diamond brilliants, created by Maison Repossi. It’s estimated to be worth upwards of $100,000!

Beautiful Bridal Hairstyles

Eva Mendes
A low-riding ponytail gets an elegant upgrade when balanced with volume at the crown. N.Y.C hairstylist Giannandrea blow-dried Mendes's hair and wrapped it around Velcro rollers. Afert releasing, he side parted the hair to create bangs, brushing the rest into a ponytail. He then teased sections with hairspray, anchoring them with bobby pins.

Scarlett Johansson
Babaii transformed Johansson's shoulder-length hair into a style worthy of a modern-day Grace Kelly—ideal with a skin baring gown. He started by spritzing David Babaii for Wildaid Bohemian Beach Spray on the roots before he curled her hair into allover ringlets. Next, he backcombed the hair, diminishing the tight curls but keeping the body, and swept it across the nape of the neck to one side. Freeing a 2-inch section of hair in the front, he secured the rest with bobby pins. Babaii shaped the loose hair into a few big waves with a 1-inch curling iron, using a firm hold hairspray to set.

Ellen Pompeo
To create this "sexy and understated" chignon, Harry Josh, creative consultant for John Freida Collection, washed Pompeo's hair with Weather Works by Frizz-Ease from John Freida before blowing dry 2-inch sections. Once dry, he built up volume at the crown by spraying Sheer Blonde Crystal Clear Hairspray from John Freida while backcombing the hair. Josh pulled the hair into a disheveled side bun 2 inches behind Pompeo's ear and secured it with bobby pins

Penelope Cruz
For this classic half-up look, N.Y.C. stylist Danilo misted a voluminizing spray on Cruz's roots before blowing the hair dry with a mixed bristle brush. To create body and texture, he used a 2" iron and set the sections by pin-curling them. Next, he gathered the top section of hair and backcombed it for extra height. He secured the upper-section with a bobby pin and let the rest fall free, while taming flyaways.

Jessica Alba
L.A. stylist Robert Ramos diffused Alba's hair to coax out its natural wave. Next, he gave her a center part, sectioned off hair from either side of the head and French-braided it. He made smaller plaits from her bottom layer of hair, wrapping them back toward the center and pinning them. "At the back of the head, the braids should be intertwined," he explains.
